
John Durham Peters
John Durham Peters is María Rosa Menocal Professor of English & Film and Media Studies at Yale and is the author of “Speaking into the Air: A History of the Idea of Communication” (1999), “Courting the Abyss: Free Speech and the Liberal Tradition” (2005), and “The Marvelous Clouds: Toward a Philosophy of Elemental Media” (2015), all from the University of Chicago Press. Among other things, he likes chasing Frisbees. He is a fellow at the IKKM Weimar in summer 2018.

Moralists such as Lucian, Swift, Voltaire, and Nietzsche love to think with insects. Fleas, flies, and mosquitoes have long served as topics for reflection about scalar inversion. This talk considers this legacy for thinking about scalar trouble in digitally mediated environments today.
